Why does SIMP Production use cobots?
SIMP Production pursued a twofold goal with automation: to ensure employee safety through a collaborative solution while also achieving significant time savings. A particular focus was placed on reducing cleaning phases and optimizing material consumption. The use of modern cobot technology made production more efficient, while freeing skilled workers from repetitive tasks so they could take on more demanding assembly work.
What challenges had to be overcome?
Before automation, bonding aluminum profiles was a purely manual and extremely laborious process. Fitters had to hold the profile with one hand while precisely guiding a glue gun with the other. This monotonous work required the utmost concentration, was physically demanding, and often led to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) due to the constant need to pull the trigger. In addition, the manual process was messy, which meant that a lot of cleaning was required after assembly.
What does Universal Robots' solution look like?
In collaboration with a certified partner, a compact and safe gluing station was developed and integrated directly into the existing workflow. The system is based on a UR5e cobot installed on a special work table.
Preparation
The fitter places four profiles simultaneously on a device that forms the angles for a complete frame.
fixation
At the touch of a button, the operator activates a cylinder that locks the profiles in the exact position.
Automated small order
The UR5e cobot applies the adhesive to the ends of the profiles according to a precise, preprogrammed pattern.
Efficient assembly
While the adhesive dries, the installer can finish assembling the pre-prepared frames, which optimizes the overall process time.
