Why does Raumland GmbH use cobots?

The third-generation family business bottles over five million bottles of around 2,500 different wines every year. In order to focus more on product quality and increase efficiency, Raumland was looking for a solution to relieve its employees of the physically demanding work at the end of the bottling line. The goal was to find a solution that was flexible enough to handle the enormous variety of products while also reducing the physical strain on the team in the long term.

What challenges had to be overcome?

Manual palletizing at the end of the line was extremely stressful for employees: up to 40 tons of total weight had to be moved in a single 8-hour shift. Conventional automation solutions reached their limits due to a lack of flexibility when it came to changing packaging, system size, or price. Raumland needed a compact system that could be quickly adapted to different carton types and palletizing patterns in order to avoid bottlenecks.

What does Universal Robots' solution look like?

Raumland opted for the Robotiq's ready-to-use PE20 palletizing solution, which was developed specifically for use with the UR20 cobot. This turnkey application now handles all heavy lifting.

1
Space-saving integration

The UR20 cobot is positioned on a platform directly at the end of the filling line between two Euro pallets.

2
Efficient recording

Equipped with a wide vacuum gripper, the cobot lifts two wine boxes simultaneously from the conveyor belt.

3
Precise stacking

The robot places the boxes exactly according to the palletizing pattern stored for each customer.

4
Continuous workflow

As soon as a pallet is fully loaded, the cobot automatically switches to the second pallet while an employee removes the first pallet.

Why the UR20 was the ideal choice for Raumland GmbH

Perfect teamwork

As part of the PE20 complete solution, the UR20 cobot uses perfectly coordinated software that makes setting up new stacking patterns a breeze.

High load capacity & range

The UR20 easily handles the weight of the wine cartons and fully covers the required working radius for two pallets.

Maximum flexibility

Stored programs allow management to quickly adjust the application via the handheld device when changing wines.

“The cobot perfectly reflects what we need. It is a flexible machine, compact, quick to set up, and ultimately affordable.”
