Robotiq Finishing Copilot

Robotiq Finishing Copilot is a software extension for Universal Robots that greatly simplifies finishing processes such as grinding, polishing, or deburring. The software generates complex machining paths with just a few waypoints while ensuring constant force control. Finishing Copilot enables both "part-to-tool" applications (workpiece moves against a fixed tool) and "tool-to-part" machining (robot guides the tool).

Processing paths in just a few minutes
Generate complex paths instantly: 4 waypoints for flat surfaces, 6 for curved surfaces, and 9 for spherical surfaces.
Constant force & adaptive adjustment
The robot maintains a defined force and automatically adapts the process to changes in components or positions.
External TCP & tool wear compensation
Easy setting of an external tool center point and automatic adjustment for tool wear (0.2 mm accuracy).

Description

Finishing Copilot was developed specifically for automating repetitive finishing processes. The software converts manually taught robot behavior into stable, repeatable machining paths—with minimal programming effort.

Key features:

  • path generator With just a few waypoints, the Copilot automatically creates a smooth, optimized machining path—ideal for grinding, polishing, satin finishing, or deburring.

  • constant force control To ensure a uniform surface, the robot maintains the same force during each cycle and controls the stiffness individually for each axis.
  • External TCP
Finishing Copilot recognizes that the tool is mounted externally (e.g., stationary grinding machine). The robot guides the part precisely over the externally defined contact point.

  • A reference point on the tool detects tool wear and automatically adjusts the program—no manual reworking required.

  • If the position of the workpiece changes slightly, the path is automatically corrected—ideal for tolerances or varying clamping forces.

  • The robot can be guided by hand across the surface to intuitively learn natural movements and paths.

This makes Finishing Copilot ideal for companies that want to automate complex machining processes quickly and reproducibly.
